Tasty, firm locally grown brown onions. I consider this the "Poor man's onion " - it's the cheapest of all the varieties, and just sits quietly bulking up soups, stir fry etc. It has its own distinct flavour, and isn't pleasant to eat raw. Ours have recently been used in quiche. No photo as we've run out !

Brown onions are the classic all-rounder – cheap, easy to find, and they make pretty much everything taste better once you cook them down. Raw they’re a bit full-on, but cooked they go sweet and rich, perfect for soups, stews or just about anything. They last ages in the cupboard too. Downsides? They make you cry when you chop them, they’re too strong for most salads, and they can upset some people’s stomachs.

small to medium onions, always good to use in a meat sauce or sliced in half moons for stir fries and they keep their texture.
