Nescafé Blend 43 Instant Coffee is one of those pantry staples that just does the job well. It’s quick and easy to make, which is perfect for busy mornings or when you just want a coffee without the fuss. The flavour is bold and a little on the bitter side, but it has that classic coffee taste that wakes you up and gives you the boost you need. It’s not as smooth or fancy as café coffee, but that’s expected for instant. What’s good about Blend 43 is how reliable it is – you know what you’re getting every time, and it mixes well with milk, sugar, or even just on its own if you like it strong. It’s also a popular choice in offices and workplaces because it suits most people’s taste and is easy to make in seconds. Overall, it’s a solid everyday coffee that’s affordable, convenient, and gives you that familiar flavour that many Aussies have grown up with. If you want something quick and dependable, Nescafé Blend 43 is hard to go past.

Nescafe Blend 43 is essentially, I would wager, the default taste that crosses most people older than 29’s tongue when they imagine coffee. There’s nothing much that can be said that’s all that interesting. It’s broadly the default 4-star, 43/50, average, familiar and expected baseline for what instant coffee is. It’s the Coca Cola of coffee. It’s the Mazda CX-5 of coffee. The Vegemite of coffee. It’s Mr Brightside being played just before a nightclub closes in the 2000s of coffee. It’s perfectly serviceable, ubiquitous, universally recognisable and in the same way that the cardboard box mathematically solved packaging, Nescafé Blend 43 has mathematically solved coffee. While there are probably at least 43 ways to enjoy Blend 43, for real novelty you need to venture to one of Nescafé’s 43 other options. My hand hovered over and then rejected a 400g jar of Moccona that was a few dollars more, and I briefly looked at and then kicked the can of International Roast on the bottom shelf that was $5 cheaper. Attached photo is of a can of Blend 43 in its natural environment- cozied up next to a $20 KMart kettle.
