I’ve not had salmon for a long time. in fact I never really was a salmon eater. so I opened this tin with a bit of caution. But this salmon was soft and flaky and juicy (if that is the right word - I guess I mean not dry). It’s a small tin and perfect for a snack or as part of your lunch. I mixed mine in with some cous cous and ther things and it was really enjoyable. I’ve not tried the ones with flavours yet (like tomato and onion), but looking forward to it now. Easy ring pull opening. Tins stack nicely in your pantry until you’re ready to enjoy.

The flavour is clean and mild because the salmon is packed in springwater rather than oil. That keeps it light, but it also means the taste can feel a little plain on its own. The salmon flakes easily and has a soft texture, making it ideal for sandwiches, salads, or mixing into pasta. The fish is generally tender and flaky, although the consistency can vary slightly between cans. Because it’s packed in water, it can sometimes feel a bit soft after draining, but it still works well when mixed with other ingredients.

John West Salmon in Springwater is a simple, reliable pantry staple that delivers exactly what you expect — clean-tasting, high-quality salmon with minimal fuss. The fish has a mild, natural flavour that isn’t overly salty or oily, thanks to the absence of added brine or sauce. It’s packed in springwater, which helps preserve the salmon’s freshness without masking its taste. The texture is tender yet firm, making it versatile for a range of meals — from salads and sandwiches to pasta dishes or sushi bowls. It flakes easily with a fork but doesn’t fall apart into mush, which is a big plus compared to some other tinned fish products. Nutritionally, it’s a strong choice: high in protein, a good source of omega-3s, and lower in sodium than many alternatives. The convenience factor is also worth noting — no bones or skin to deal with (depending on the variant you buy), and it’s ready to eat straight from the tin. If there’s a downside, it’s that the flavour can be a little plain on its own, so it shines best when paired with herbs, dressings, or other ingredients. It’s not a gourmet experience, but it’s consistently good, healthy, and easy to use.
