I like this fish. you can steam or pan fry. the fish is made in Vietnam. taste good and keeps fresh in the bag. the bag is resealable and easy to open and store in the freezer. you get a lot in a pack so it’s value for money. no skin on fish

I usually oven-bake or pan-fry them with lemon, garlic, or a spice rub. They're budget-friendly and take on flavour well, but skip the thinner pieces-they dry out too fast.

Coles Basa Fillets are one of the most popular and budget-friendly white fish options available in Australian supermarkets, often sold frozen or thawed at the deli. The primary advantages of basa, which is a type of Asian catfish, are its cooking properties: the fillets are naturally large, boneless, possess a very mild flavor, and have a relatively firm, moist texture that is less flaky than cod. This neutral profile and firm texture makes it exceptionally versatile, allowing it to easily absorb spices, marinades, and sauces, making it an excellent choice for curries, tacos, or simple pan-fried dishes. Its low fat and high protein content also make it a healthy, accessible source of complete protein. However, the consumption of basa is often debated due to sourcing and quality concerns, even when sold by major retailers like Coles who commit to responsible sourcing. The main point of contention is that basa is typically farmed intensively in Southeast Asia, leading to ongoing environmental and ethical concerns regarding farm waste and the use of antibiotics, although major retailers aim to source from certified farms to mitigate this. For consumers, the biggest cons relate to taste and potential health risks. Some reports suggest that due to farming practices, basa can occasionally carry a slight "muddy" or off-flavor (though high-quality processing largely prevents this). While most safety tests meet Australian standards, the persistent public concern about the origin of the fish and its potential for higher levels of contaminants or antibiotic residue means some consumers prefer to choose local, wild-caught alternatives. The overall verdict is that Coles Basa is a convenient, cheap, and highly versatile protein but comes with inherent quality and ethical compromises compared to premium seafood.

Basa fillets are a mild-flavoured, economical white fish popular for their tender, flaky texture. Pros: * Mild Flavour: Ideal for those who prefer a less "fishy" taste, easily taking on other flavours. * Tender Texture: Cooks up moist and flaky. * Versatile: Great for baking, frying, grilling, steaming, or adding to stews. * Affordable: One of the most budget-friendly fish options. * Convenient: Typically sold boneless and skinless, requiring minimal prep. * Good Protein Source: A lean source of protein. Cons: * Ethical/Environmental Concerns: Farming practices in their primary source (Vietnam) have faced criticism regarding environmental impact and sustainability. * Lower Omega-3s: Contains less beneficial Omega-3s compared to fattier fish. * Potential for Contaminants: Concerns exist due to farming environments, though import standards aim to mitigate this. * Can Become Watery: Prone to a watery or mushy texture if overcooked or if excess water is present. * Lack of Strong Flavour: Its mildness might be a downside for those seeking a distinct fish taste.

It's really a great ingredient for cooking, especially when you don't want to pick the bones from fish. Personally, I seldom buy seafood, but when I wanna purchase one of them, this is one of my top choices.

The price is cheap and affordable, and there is no excessive fishy smell. It is very convenient to cook and can be eaten after steaming. But it is a pity that there is rarely a chance to see discounts in convenience stores.

Good option, will stock up if it is on special. I like to marinate in lemon and have it grilled with veggies.
