This 1.6 kg pack of Pampas Puff Pastry is honestly one of the most reliable frozen puff pastry blocks I’ve used in Australia. What I like / Pros: • Very good rise and flakiness — layers separate nicely when you bake it properly • Decent buttery flavour for the price point (better than some of the cheaper home brands) • The block is large enough to make multiple things (I usually get 2 full family-sized pies + some pastries or pinwheels out of one pack) • Thaws reasonably quickly if you leave it in the fridge overnight — no horrible cracking or tearing when rolling • Consistent quality across multiple packets I’ve bought over the last year What could be better / Cons: • It’s still not quite as rich or golden as the more expensive imported all-butter brands (e.g. some French or premium Aussie artisan ones), so if you’re after ultra-luxury mille-feuille or super delicate mille-feuille, you might notice the difference • Can sometimes stick a tiny bit to the plastic wrap when unfolding — I just dust the bench very lightly with flour now and it’s fine • The pack says 10 sheets but because it’s one big block you have to cut/roll it yourself — not pre-rolled sheets (this is personal preference — some people actually prefer the block) How I normally use it: • Savoury: sausage rolls, pot pies, galettes, cheese & spinach rolls • Sweet: apple turnovers, vanilla custard danishes, rough puff-style tarte tatin Bakes up crisp, golden and airy almost every time as long as you don’t roll it too aggressively and you give it a decent egg wash. For the price (especially when it’s on special) it’s excellent value and I keep coming back to it. Highly recommend if you’re doing bulk baking or just want dependable puff pastry in the freezer. Would buy again: definitely.
