👍 Pros 1. Low in calories Baby cos lettuce is very low in energy (kilojoules/calories), making it a good option if you’re trying to eat lighter. 2. Good source of certain vitamins & minerals It provides vitamin A, K, some vitamin C, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, etc. 3. High in fibre (relatively) Helps with digestion, fullness. Even though it’s leafy, it contributes dietary fibre. 4. Crisp texture & pleasant flavour Taste is mild, slightly sweet (baby cos tends to be sweeter than mature cos), crisp and juicy. Makes for a nice contrast in salads or wraps. 5. Versatile & easy to use Works raw (salads, wraps), can act as scoops, also holds up reasonably well against dressings because the leaves are firmer than some very tender greens. 6. Hydration Like most leafy greens, it’s mostly water, so contributes to fluid intake. ⸻ 👎 Cons 1. Lower in some nutrients compared to darker leafy greens While baby cos has many good nutrients, it has less of certain vitamins (e.g. vitamin C) compared to lettuces/salads with darker, more bitter leaves (spinach, rocket, kale etc.). 2. Can wilt or lose texture quickly Being tender leaves, if not stored well (cool, humid, not damaged), it can go limp, lose crispness, decay, or develop sliminess. 3. Relatively delicate Leaves can bruise or tear easily. Not great for very rough handling or transport. 4. Low in protein/fats It’s mostly water, fibre and micronutrients. If you want a meal that’s more filling, you’ll need other components (protein, healthy fat). 5. Seasonal / price fluctuations Depending on region and season, it can be more expensive or less available; quality may vary. 6. Food safety risk if not handled properly Leafy greens can harbor bacteria; must wash well, store properly.
