They’re kind of weirdly charming. At first they all look the same—big head, tiny body, blank eyes—but once you start noticing the little details (outfits, props, poses), you get why people collect them. Some look great, especially characters with distinctive designs. Others… not so much. A lot of human characters end up looking almost identical.

Launching in 1993, Hellboy comics has developed an enormous cult following that has seen it spawn various films, video games and more. The story follows the life of Hellboy, a well-meaning demon who was summoned from Hell to Earth as a “baby” demon by Nazi occultists (spawning his hatred for Nazis). He was discovered by the Allied Forces; amongst them, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who formed the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). Although a bit gruff, Hellboy shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to demons, and has an ironic sense of humour. This is said to be because of his upbringing under Professor Bruttenholm, who raised him as a normal boy.
